5 Tips for Better Sleep

It’s crucial to be getting enough sleep through the night so that you can stay healthy, stay energized, and be left feeling refreshed. Without proper sleep every night, your brain will not be able to function properly and you can develop health problems. These 5 easy tips can allow you to get a good night’s sleep and overcome any sleep struggles. Read below to see which tips you should incorporate into your life for better sleep!

#1: Remove Your Electronics

One of the first things you can do for better sleep is to remove electronic devices from your bedroom! This includes phones, tablets, TVs, and computers. When you remove your electronic devices from your bedroom, it creates and reinforces the idea that this environment is meant for sleeping and resting. A quiet and dark room is necessary for better sleep.

#2: Stay Consistent!

In order to get better sleep, you MUST stay consistent with your bedtime routine. It’s important to stick to the same routine and schedule every night so that you will be able to fall asleep easier and wake up feeling refreshed. Make sure to go to bed at the same time each night and wake up at the same time each morning as well. This gets your body in a routine and allows you to feel better. Timing is key!

#3: Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, & Nicotine

Everyone knows that caffeine keeps you up and awake, but did you know that alcohol and nicotine can make it harder to fall asleep as well? Although alcohol is a depressant, the effects of drinking can lead to waking up throughout the night. Along with this, nicotine and tobacco should be avoided as it makes it harder to fall asleep at night. Try to avoid these stimulants/depressants if you want a better night’s sleep!

#4: Limit Daytime Naps

We all love a good nap, especially when you feel tired throughout the day, but napping can disrupt your sleep cycle and will keep you awake later into the night. When you get into the habit of getting a full night’s rest, daytime naps and even daytime tiredness won’t be an issue. If you’re still tired after a full night’s rest and want a boost of energy without napping, try getting up and moving around OR eat a healthy snack, such as nuts or yogurt!

#5: Be Physically Active!

Regular and consistent physical activities promote better sleeping habits. When you are physically active, you are more likely to fall asleep quicker at night, wake up less throughout the night, and feel more refreshed in the mornings. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. This can be done through running, walking, biking, strength training, or even swimming!
