Winter is almost here! And, in Chicago, we are no strangers to the cold temperatures! Winter weather can be harsh on the skin, often leading to dryness, irritation, and other skincare concerns. Below are some easy winter skincare hacks to help you maintain that dewy glow throughout these colder months!
Hydration is QUEEN!
Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated from the inside out. Cold weather and indoor heating systems can lead to dehydration.
We recommend serums with Hyaluronic Acid to help retain moisture in the skin.
Ceramides also help create a barrier to prevent moisture from leaving your skin.
Use a Mild / Gentle Cleanser
Use a mild, hydrating cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Consider cleansing your face with lukewarm water instead of hot water, as hot water can contribute to dryness.
Look for “milk” based cleansers, or those with Green Tea as their key ingredient.
Moisturize Regularly
Use a rich and hydrating moisturizer to combat dry skin. Apply it right after showering or washing your face to lock in moisture.
Most skin can tolerate “heavier” moisturizers in the winter, or we also recommend a great face oil in combination with the moisturizer!
Protect Your Skin
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, even during the winter. UV rays can still be damaging, and snow can reflect sunlight, increasing exposure.
Lip Balm
Keep your lips moisturized with a good-quality lip balm. Lips are often more prone to dryness and chapping in cold weather.
Exfoliate Gently
Exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells, but avoid harsh exfoliants that can exacerbate dryness. Consider using a gentle exfoliator once or twice a week.
We recommend gentle enzymes over scrubs.
Humidify Your Environment
Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air in your home. This can help prevent your skin from becoming too dry, especially if you use a heating system.
Warm Clothing
Protect your skin from harsh winds by wearing scarves, hats, and other warm clothing. Cold winds can strip away the natural oils from your skin.
We have an outer layer of the skin called the acid mantle that we need to protect!
Avoid Long, Hot Showers
Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils. Opt for shorter, lukewarm showers to help retain your skin's moisture.
Protect Your Hands
Wear gloves when you go outside to protect your hands from the cold and apply a moisturizing hand cream regularly.
Get Regular Facials
Nothing keeps the skin glowing better than routine professional facials. As the seasons change, our skin is exposed to different elements. Regular facials can keep the skin exfoliated, hydrated, and looking brighter and more revived as we move from one season to the next.
Remember, everyone's skin is unique, so it may take some experimentation to find the products and routines that work best for you during the winter months. Adjust your skincare routine based on your skin's needs and any specific challenges you may face in colder weather.
